What to Expect During the Pool Resurfacing Process

A beautiful PTI® resurfaced pool, complete with bar and hot tub, perfectly complements the green, open golf course in this backyard space.

Once you’ve decided on your favorite PTI® pool finish, it’s time to talk about application. While the type of finish, location, weather conditions, and authorized applicator can all serve to alter an individual project, the general application outline is largely the same. Here’s what you can expect during the PTI® pool resurfacing process.

PTI®’s Pool Resurfacing Process

The first step in the process is to prepare the pool for application. If there’s an existing finish on the walls, your applicator will strip it off to create the best surface for the new PTI® pebble finish. After the pool surface has been prepped, the next step is to mix the batch formula. PTI®’s unique blends are combined with other ingredients, including water, cement, and coloring, to create the finished mixture.

Once the formula is perfectly blended, a pneumatic spray applicator or other specialty equipment is used to shoot the material through a hose and onto the pool surface—this application technique ensures even coverage and a consistent finish. Immediately after application, your authorized applicator will hand trowel the material to create a compact surface and ensure the pebble mixture is properly secured and ready for the next step, exposure.

Exposing the finish involves spraying the pool with water or wiping it down to remove any excess cement from the surface. This process may vary depending on the material you’ve chosen for your pool finish— glass finishes typically require different exposure methods than pebble ones do. Every one of our authorized applicators is trained to apply each finish using the most effective techniques ensuring the best possible result.

The next step is to leave the finish to set and harden. As with exposure, the specific details for how long the material needs to sit will depend on the type of finish you’ve selected. After this curing period, the finish will then be pressure washed and detailed. A special acid solution is used to create a clean finish free of any excess residue or film left behind by the application process.

Once detailing is finished, the application process is complete—the only thing left to do is fill up your beautiful new pool and enjoy! Be sure to properly balance chemicals prior to diving in.
